Grape Ape
Grape Ape
Also known as: Purple Ape, Ape, Grape Ape Kush
Overview
Grape Ape is an indica-dominant hybrid cannabis strain originally propagated by Apothecary Genetics and later by Barney's Farm, both renowned cannabis breeders. This strain is a cross between three potent parent strains: Mendocino Purps, Skunk, and Afghani. The strain has garnered significant recognition in the cannabis community, winning several prestigious awards including the Green Cup two years in a row (2005 and 2006) and Best Concentrate at the 2011 High Times Medical Colorado Cup.
Named for its distinct grape-like smell and flavor, Grape Ape develops the characteristic deep purple buds and leaves typical of its Purple genetics lineage. The dominant flavonoid anthocyanin gives the plant its distinctive and aesthetic purple hue. Its dense, compact buds are wreathed in deep purple leaves which darken as this indica reaches full maturation following its 7 to 8 week flowering time. The chunky flowers have dark purple foliage stacked with dark green colors, wrapped in orange hairs and bright white trichomes. With THC levels typically ranging from 15-25%, Grape Ape is considered a relatively strong strain that provides potent effects without being overpowering.

Growing Information
Grape Ape is a relatively easy strain to grow, flowering in 7-8 weeks indoors and ready to harvest in late September to early October outdoors. The strain prefers a warm and dry climate. Indoor yields can reach up to 500g/m² (16 ounces per square meter), while outdoor growers can expect yields of 500-700g per plant (up to 28 ounces per plant). Being of indica nature, it does not grow extremely tall, making it an ideal indoor plant, rarely exceeding 4 feet in height. However, it grows quite dense and requires trimming to avoid bud rot. The strain is very receptive to training methods that keep the plant low and wide, such as SOG (Sea of Green), SCROG (Screen of Green), topping, and FIM. This strain prefers a warmer, drier climate and is very resistant to pests and pathogens.
