Granddaddy Purple
Granddaddy Purple
Also known as: Grand Daddy Purp, Granddaddy Purps, GDP, Grandaddy Purple Kush, Big Daddy Purp
Overview
Granddaddy Purple (GDP) is a legendary indica-dominant cannabis strain popularized in 2003 by Ken Estes in the San Francisco Bay Area. Created through crossing Purple Urkle and Big Bud, this strain quickly rose to iconic status as one of the most well-known 'purple' cannabis strains in the United States. GDP is renowned for its striking appearance, featuring dense, oversized buds that display deep purple hues inherited from Purple Urkle, contrasted by bright orange pistils and a generous coating of snow-white trichomes. The strain inherits a complex grape and berry aroma from its lineage, with a sweet and fruity scent reminiscent of ripe grapes or berries, accentuated by earthy undertones.
Discovered in the early 2000s in California's Humboldt County, GDP exploded onto the Bay Area cannabis scene before achieving global recognition. An indica-dominant strain with deep purple buds and heavy-handed effects, a single toke is often sufficient to win over users. GDP's genetics proved so successful that its buds won first place in 2015 at the Denver High Times Cannabis Cup for Best U.S. Indica. The strain became so popular that breeders extensively used its genetics to create other hybrids, including notable descendants like Purple Punch (GDP x Larry OG).

Growing Information
Granddaddy Purple is reasonably easy to grow, even for beginners, thanks to its resilient genetics. The plants are manageable in size with a sturdy indica structure. Flowering time typically ranges 8-10 weeks indoors under a 12/12 light schedule, while outdoor growers usually harvest by mid-October. Indoor yields can reach up to 19 oz/m² (500-600g/m²), while outdoor plants can produce up to 17 oz/plant in optimal conditions. GDP thrives in warm, sunny climates with daytime temperatures between 70-80°F, prefers well-draining, nutrient-rich soil with pH 6.0-6.5, and responds well to high-quality LED or HPS lighting indoors. The strain prefers humidity levels around 40-50% and temperatures between 70-80°F, with humidity control being crucial to prevent mold on the dense buds. Regular pruning and training techniques like LST can enhance light penetration and yields, with SOG technique proving particularly successful.
