Critical Mass
Critical Mass
Also known as: Critical, Big Bud Rework
Overview
Critical Mass is an indica-dominant hybrid cannabis strain that emerged as an improved version of the classic Big Bud strain, initially bred by Mr. Nice Seeds. Created by crossing a pure Afghani indica with the legendary Skunk #1, this strain has become renowned for its exceptional yield potential and therapeutic properties. The strain gets its name from its distinctive characteristic: buds that grow so dense and heavy they can literally break branches under their own weight, requiring support structures during cultivation. Since its development before 2000, Critical Mass has become one of the most popular, grown and awarded genetics in Europe, especially in Spain. The strain's visual appearance is striking, featuring notably dense and heavy buds with dark green foliage interwoven with brownish-orange hairs, presenting a striking contrast and a lavish layer of trichomes coating the surface, signifying high THC content. Critical Mass has established itself as a cornerstone strain in cannabis breeding, having been used for thousands of hybridisation sessions due to its exceptional genetics and reliable performance.

Growing Information
Critical Mass is considered moderately easy to grow, making it suitable for both novice and experienced cultivators. Indoor flowering time ranges from 6-9 weeks (typically 8 weeks), with expected yields of 650-800g/m² (21-30oz per square meter). Outdoor plants finish by late September and can yield 500-600g per plant (17-21oz). Plants grow to 3-6 feet in height and prefer temperatures between 68-80°F (20-26°C). Humidity should be kept low (35-50%) to prevent mold, which this strain is particularly susceptible to due to its dense bud structure. Branches require support to prevent breaking from the weight of heavy buds. The strain thrives in Mediterranean-like climates outdoors and performs excellently in hydroponic systems indoors.
