Crete
Crete
Also known as: Cretan, Cretan Red
Overview
The Crete strain, also known as Cretan, is a classic Greek cannabis landrace with a legendary reputation. Seeds were collected in the early 1990s from the mountainous region of Rethimno on the island of Crete, making it an authentic heirloom cultivar. This strain represents a very rare landrace genotype with no known direct relatives, certified by Phylos Bioscience genetic analysis. Cretan is a cultivar that locals traditionally grew for bud production rather than hash, although it possesses many characteristics of hash plant families. It's a fast-flowering sativa with an incredible mix of terpenes and remarkable effects.
The strain has adapted to harsh environmental conditions through guerrilla growing techniques used by local Cretan farmers who grew on rocky slopes to avoid detection. These techniques resulted in extremely vigorous individuals that could cope excellently under various environmental stresses. The plants have been acclimatized for many years to the mountainous conditions of Crete, including very hot summer days (40°-45° Celsius) and strong winds at 400-500 meters above sea level. This landrace exhibits mostly sativa heritage harking back to the 1960s and 70s, showing the genetic profile of old-school cannabis genetics.

Growing Information
Crete can be cultivated indoors, outdoors, and in greenhouses with a flowering time of approximately 11-12 weeks (about 81 days). Plants can reach 3-4 meters in height under optimal outdoor conditions with medium internodal spacing. Outdoor yields range from 500-600 grams of dried flowers per plant, with regional harvest occurring in the second half of October in Greece. The strain thrives in warm, Mediterranean-like climates, though modern indoor cultivation techniques have proven successful. Due to outdoor open pollination techniques, the genetics contain high genetic diversity and show superior drought and pest resistance as well as tolerance to harsh environmental conditions. Characteristics include light green flowers that are neither compact nor airy, with some phenotypes showing vivid red pistils.
