Chem 4
Chem 4
Also known as: Chemdawg 4, Chemdog 4, Chemdawg #4, Chemdog #4, Chem #4
Overview
Chem 4 (aka Chemdawg #4 or Chemdog #4) is an indica-dominant hybrid strain that holds legendary status in cannabis culture. The strain originated from seeds discovered in the 1990s by a Grateful Dead fan named Chemdog, who obtained high-quality buds containing 13 seeds from Colorado growers following the Dead tour. Of the later four seeds planted in 2006, Chem 4 was reportedly the one closest to the original and is sometimes called the "Reunion Pheno." Though its exact origins remain mysterious, popular theory suggests Chem 4 traces back to Nepalese and Thai Sativa genetics. This phenotype has become one of the most celebrated offshoots of the original ChemDawg lineage, helping to shape modern cannabis by contributing genetics to iconic strains including OG Kush, Sour Diesel, and other Diesel varieties. The strain features dominant terpenes including myrcene, limonene, and humulene, producing bold citrus aromas on the nose followed by piney, earthy undertones. The flavor mirrors the aroma with lemony and gassy notes combined with a sweet, clean finish. Chem 4 produces light-green buds and grows to be a fairly tall plant, reaching up to 7 feet outdoors and 4-5 feet indoors.

Growing Information
Chem 4 is recommended only for experienced growers as it can be very meticulous and difficult to cultivate. The flowering time is approximately 9-10 weeks (70-77 days), with some reports of harvest extending to 12+ weeks for full maturity. Outdoors, harvest typically occurs from mid to late October. Plants grow 4-5 feet tall indoors but can reach up to 7 feet outdoors. Expected yields are 16-20 ounces per square meter indoors and 25-30 ounces per plant outdoors. The strain has slight susceptibility to powdery mildew and is not resistant to mildew, though it shows resistance to pests and molds. Chem 4 maintains high nitrogen demand during its 10+ week flowering period and has a high metabolism requiring consistent feeding schedules. Trellising and support structures are recommended due to heavy bud production, with large circular cages and secondary trellising layers advised for optimal results.
