Blue Moonshine is a legendary indica-dominant cannabis strain created by renowned breeder DJ Short, who developed this potent blueberry indica during his groundbreaking work in the 1980s and 1990s. Originally created by DJ Short as part of his famous "Blue family" of strains, Blue Moonshine emerged from careful breeding work that began with landrace genetics from Thailand, Afghanistan, and Mexico. The strain is almost entirely indica and has the unique distinction of being bred entirely from landrace strains, with roots in Afghani as well as Thai and Mexican landraces. The exact parentage remains somewhat mysterious, though the consensus within the cannabis community is that Blue Moonshine is a cross between Afghani and Thai, while some sources suggest it may be a cross between Blueberry and an unknown indica strain, possibly Afghani. Blue Moonshine was later made available through Dutch Passion and other seed companies, though DJ Short had minimal input in the selection and production of seeds sold by Dutch Passion. The strain is characterized by dense, well-formed buds that showcase deep greens with hints of blue and purple hues, adorned with a heavy dusting of trichomes giving it a frosty, otherworldly appearance.
