Overview

Black Widow is one of the most infamous cannabis strains that has won numerous awards since 1994, including the High Times Cannabis Cup in 1995, and has acquired acclaim from most corners of the globe. The strain was bred by combining a South Indian indica and a Brazilian sativa, making it a hybrid that tends to be slightly indica dominant, with a composition of approximately 70% sativa and 30% indica according to some sources. Black Widow is considered a daughter strain to White Widow, originally bred by Mr. Nice Seeds, and is a phenotype of the original White Widow with the same genetics but different physical characteristics. When the original breeder Shantibaba left Green House Seeds and founded Mr. Nice Seeds, he took the original Brazilian sativa mother and South Indian indica father genetics with him, renaming the strain Black Widow to distinguish it from other White Widow variants being sold by other companies. Black Widow produces not only potent but large buds as well, with flowers that are typically bright green with purple highlights and bright reddish-orange hairs. The buds are rock hard, soaked in resin and often have a crystalline sheen due to the amount of trichomes, almost looking like they came from the moon and are excessively covered with resinous trichomes.

Growing Information

Black Widow is a relatively easy-to-grow strain, known for its resistance to pests and pathogens, making it an excellent choice for beginners and naturally resistant to molds, mildew, and pests. The strain can be cultivated indoors, outdoors and in greenhouses with a flowering time of approximately 8-10 weeks indoors. In the northern hemisphere, expect harvest around September/October, and in the southern hemisphere from the end of March to April. Black Widow does well both indoors and outdoors, but will grow significantly taller outdoors, however it typically has better yields in an indoor setting. Plants usually grow to 3 feet indoors and might grow as tall as 6 feet in an open space, with a Christmas-tree shape with broad leaves and long sticky buds. Indoor growers can expect an average yield of 12-16oz/m² (350-450g/m²) and outdoor plants can produce 11-14oz/plant (300-400g/plant). Plants respond well to SOG/SCROG setups.
